Beschreibung:

The very first Porsche production car was completed in Gmünd, Austria1948 and used a 1,086cc engine that was really a tuned version of the Volkswagen flat-four. There was nothing wrong with that, though, as Ferdinand Porsche had designed the Volkswagen also. Like the Volkswagen, that flat-four-cylinder engine was placed behind the rear swing axles and front suspension was independent as well. Brakes were mechanical drums and the transmission featured four non-synchromesh forward gears and reverse. In 1950, after about twelve cars were built, production was transferred to Zuffenhausen, which was suburb of Stuttgart. That same year, New York imported car impresario Max Hoffman began importing Porsches into the United States. By 1951, Porsches were available with engines displacing 1,086, 1,286 and 1,488cc. Horsepower ranged from 40 to 60 bhp (DIN). During the 1950s, the 356 evolved quickly. The shape remained essential the same, but it matured. Engines grew in displacement and output, and eventually the transmission received synchromesh. Drums also received hydraulic actuation. In 1956 the 356A came along, with both mechanical and cosmetic improvements. However, in 1960, the 356B was introduced. Bumpers were more robust and featured overriders and the sloop of the hood had changed, while the headlamps were raised. The base engine was a 1,600cc unit producing 60 horsepower (DIN), while the 1600S model made 72 horsepower and the 1600S 90 generated 90 horsepower. Those horses were transmitted to the rear wheels by way of an all-synchromesh four-speed transaxle. In principle, the suspension was unchanged. Brakes remained hydraulic drums, although the actual drums were of cast aluminum with iron liners. This particular 356B coupe is rare in that it has never been 'messed with' and remains in the exact 60 horsepower tune in which it left the dealer’s showroom. Its second owner drove it daily along twisty Hollywood roads from 1964 until 1978 when he retired from the Fox studios. Since 1978 it has been garaged and driven little. An original black on black Porsche coupe, the upholstery has been replaced as needed. It retains its original factory Becker Europa AM/FM radio and the correct 6 volt electrical system. The engine was fully rebuilt little over 13,000 miles ago, at which time the odometer showed 107,000 miles. Recent work also includes a repaint and extensive detailing in and out. A California black plate car and its original keys attest to the originality of this very fine three-owner car.
