Body No. 12478 Introduced at the Geneva auto show in 1957, the Maserati 3500 GT was produced through 1964. More than 2,200 of these sleek 2+2 pillarless coupes were built, each one a tribute to the racing heritage of one of Italy's most storied car builders. The 3500 GT's alloy body was styled by Carozzeria Touring and utilized the firm's famous Superleggera lightweight construction techniques. A derivative of the engine designed for the world championship-winning Maserati Tipo 250F Formula 1 racer, the 3500 GT's 3.5-Liter DOHC six-cylinder engine produced 240-hp in carbureted form. The 1961-1964 production was equipped with a ZF five-speed manual transmission, replacing the 4-speed used earlier. The GTi designation arrived in 1962—the “i” signifying Lucas-sourced fuel injection, introduced that year. This example is one of the 390 GTi Coupes built in 1962. It was completed in November of that year and soon thereafter was delivered to Sig. Carlo Bonazzi, of Verona Italy. Factory history indicates it was originally finished in “Grigio Albany Metaliccato” with red leather interior. Power windows and chrome 16-inch Borrani center-lock wire wheels were additionally specified. During a 1991 restoration, the Maserati was refinished in its current medium blue metallic color. In 1993, the car passed to a new owner from Virginia. With its odometer currently reading 67,326 km/h (approximately 41,742 miles), the Touring Coupe still shows well, although some bubbling is evident in the paint. All trim and bright work remains excellent and the dark red leather interior is entirely presentable. The vendor states the Maserati's engine runs smoothly and smoke-free. It is presently equipped with three Weber 42DCOE carburetors, a common upgrade for the original and problematic fuel injection system. The five-speed transmission reportedly shifts smoothly and the car's four-wheel disc brakes are said to perform well. The older Pirrelli Cinturato 185SR16 tires evidence little wear, but should be replaced for driving purposes, and it is currently missing its spare tire. The 3500 GT was the first street-equipped car to carry the famous Maserati racers' trident badge. With its race-bred engine and stylish good looks, the 3500 GT stood out among its contemporaries. The historically significant Maserati is today recognized as one of the great Italian gran turismo cars of its era.
