THE LINCOLN CONTINENTAL
After several years of producing ever-larger be-finned and chrome-heavy luxury cars, Ford's management had come to realize in the late 1950s that some serious changes were needed at Lincoln Division. The 1961 Lincoln Continental thus was a completely new design, based on the 1958 Thunderbird - and it became one of the most influential designs of the 1960s.
The new, smaller Continental would be offered as a four-door hardtop sedan and a four-door convertible on a 123-inch wheelbase – more than a foot shorter than the huge 1960 Continental – and both models would feature "suicide" rear doors, greatly easing entry and departure for back-seat passengers.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This stunningly original and exceptionally well-preserved Presidential Black over Tan Lincoln Continental left the Wixom, Michigan-based bespoke Continental plant in 1962 destined for the mild climate of Sacramento, California, where it was sold new to Mr. Mike T. Keno through R & J Lincoln Mercury at a staggering price of nearly $7,000. The luxurious Continental would remain with Mr. Keno until 1999, when acquired - after fierce negotiations - by John White to become part of the Ramshead Collection.
A true custodian and diligent caretaker of original and preserved cars, Mr. White has since kept the time-capsule Continental in its impeccable original condition, and today less than 45,000 have been accumulated since new. The car retains the original 'Presidential Black' exterior paint, tan leather and silk-like interior, chrome and glass, and just service items such as tires and battery has been replaced. Dutifully serviced and maintained while both in Mr. Keno and White's car, the car looks and drives like superbly original and well-loved machine, and even the radio works. The mouthwatering history file accompanying the Continental includes a copy of the original sales invoice, window sticker, deposit slips from Mr. Keno's purchase, old California registration cards, the original owner's manual and original keys. Testimony to its impeccable condition, this very Lincoln Continental was showed at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance while in John White's care, which pretty much sums up just how superior this time-capsule Continental is.
