1962 Jaguar E-Type Series I Roadster Lot Number 147 Registration 846 HYP Chassis Number 850548 Engine Number R6043-9 Odometer reading 85,000 miles Estimate £90,000 - £110,000 Result Sold - £145,600 Print details Send this to a friend 5 more images Introduced in 3.8 litre form in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type caused a sensation when it appeared with instantly classic lines and 150mph top speed. While, inevitably, the car's stupendous straight-line performance and gorgeous looks grabbed the headlines, there was a lot more to the E-Type beneath the skin. The newcomer's design owed much to that of the racing D-Type and, indeed, the E-Type would be one of the last great sports cars developed directly from a successful competition ancestor. Just as in the D-Type, a monocoque tub formed the main body/chassis structure while a tubular space frame extended forwards to support the engine. The latter was the same 3.8-litre, triple-carburettor, 'S' unit first offered as an option on the preceding XK150. With a claimed 265 horsepower on tap, the E-Type's performance did not disappoint. Firstly, because it weighed around 500lb less than the XK150 and secondly, because aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer used experience gained with the D-Type to create one of the most elegant and efficient shapes ever to grace a motor car. First registered in the second year of E-Type production on the 16th November 1962, this early chassis, #850548, was originally delivered to Mr. J Pitt-Becker of London through Henlys Ltd. and is one of only 942 righthand drive 3.8 litre roadsters. The Heritage Certificate that accompanies the car shows it was manufactured on 8th June, 1962 and dispatched on the 21st June and registered JPB 23. The old style logbook shows that the registration number JPB 23 was removed from the car on the 7th December, 1973 when we assume the car changed hands and has had two owners since with the current registered keeper taking ownership on the 30th January, 2009. Put into storage a number of years ago in the West Country; it runs and drives but we would recommend having a precautionary check over before the car is used in earnest. Finished in its original colour scheme of Carmen Red with a red interior, this matching numbers example remains in an unrestored, original condition, showing a wonderful patina throughout and would make an ideal restoration project or indeed, to be a little different, left as it is. Supplied with the aforementioned Heritage Certificate, old style log book, old MoT test certificates with the most recent expiring in 2014 and a V5C; it is now rare to find an early example of Jaguar's iconic E-Type in such condition.
