1962 Jaguar E-Type Series I Roadster (3.8 Litre) Lot Number 264 Registration VSU 473 Chassis Number 877026 Engine Number R4906-9 Odometer reading 8,879 miles Estimate £120,000 - £135,000 Result Sold - £113,120 Print details Send this to a friend Introduced in 3.8 litre form in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type caused a sensation when it appeared with instantly classic lines and 150mph top speed. While, inevitably, the car's stupendous straight-line performance and gorgeous looks grabbed the headlines, there was a lot more to the E-Type beneath the skin. The newcomer's design owed much to that of the racing D-Type and, indeed, the E-Type would be one of the last great sports cars developed directly from a successful competition ancestor. Just as in the D-Type, a monocoque tub formed the main body/chassis structure while a tubular space frame extended forwards to support the engine. The latter was the same 3.8-litre, triple-carburettor, 'S' unit first offered as an option on the preceding XK150. With a claimed 265 horsepower on tap, the E-Type's performance did not disappoint. Firstly, because it weighed around 500lb less than the XK150 and secondly, because aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer used experience gained with the D-Type to create one of the most elegant and efficient shapes ever to grace a motor car. This E-Type 3.8 litre Roadster was originally sent to the U.S. and was repatriated to the UK in 1991. She was converted to righthand drive format and given a light restoration. Recently, this Jaguar has undergone some major restoration work including a bare metal respray with a superb paint finish. New seals have been fitted around the doors and windows along with new carpets and aluminium dash panels. The front disc and pads have been replaced together with front suspension bushes; all of the engine coolant hoses have been replaced with new clips. The vendor has spent many hours painstakingly preparing this E-Type to ensure she presents in excellent order. Supplied with a V5C registration document together with a full years MoT test certificate and a two history folders, this matching numbers Jaguar E-Type roadster is a stunning example and certainly deserves closer inspection.
