*340hp *327ci V-8 engine *Four-speed manual transmission *Last of the C1s *Longtime Pacific Northwest car *The American sports car icon The 1962 Corvettes were in a holding pattern, as the radical split-window Sting Ray coupe was being readied in the wings as a 1963 model. The 1958 body style had been tinkered with in 1961, getting the Sting Ray tail early and picking up some useful trunk space at the same time. However this would be the last year for an opening trunk until the 1997 convertible. At a base price of $4,038, the new Corvette crossed the $4,000 mark for the first time, but sales jumped nearly 50%, to 14,531 units. It also lost the side trim that marked the coves, so that there were no two-tones, and buyers had to settle for seven solid colors. As part of toning things down, narrow whitewalls became optional as well. The venerable 283 cubic-inch engine was no longer available either, and the new 327 cubic-inch mill replaced it. Dual four-barrel carburetors were no longer available and there was only one 360-horsepower fuel injection option. This was also the last year for solid rear axles. Believed to have spent the majority of its life in Portland, Oregon, it has an older repaint in Rally Red, but it's still bright and the car has very good chrome trim. The interior is finished in gray leather and the car has a black canvas top. The engine is the 340-horsepower 327 cubic inch V8, with 4-barrel carburetor, which was the most popular engine and chosen by 4,412 buyers. The engine compartment is typical; it's not tidy but appears correct, with the exception of an alternator being fitted. The transmission is a 4-speed, by far the most popular choice, with 11,318 sold. The car rides on radial tires with spinner hubcaps but appears to have been lowered slightly. The odometer reads just over 5600 miles, which may mark the occasion of a past restoration.
