Porsche's 356 became a legend in its own time, and the passage of more time has only enhanced – with ample justification and support – the legend. Porsche continuously updated the 356 from the very earliest days of the model, gradually replacing its early Volkswagen-based components with parts of Porsche manufacture incorporating detail changes. Detail changes came frequently but major change was made only when necessary and after due consideration of their effect to improve performance, handling, comfort and reliability. After a significant updating in 1955 with the 356 A, Porsche in 1959 introduced the 356 B, its most significant evolution yet. Motivated in part by increasingly demanding safety regulations the 356 B had raised, stronger bumpers and raised headlights that noticeably altered the car's frontal appearance. Vent windows in the doors and hinged rear windows improved interior ventilation. Improved Alfin brakes with cooling fins also benefited from air intakes below the headlights which channeled cooling air to the front drums Only two years later, in mid-1961, Porsche updated the 356 B with a new body known as the T-6. It included a (much) larger coupé rear window, much improved interior ventilation and window defogging, twin engine ventilation grilles on the rear deck and relocated the fuel filler out of the front luggage compartment to the right front fender under a body-color door. No longer would an inattentive gas station attendant risk soaking Porsche owners' weekend duds in high octane. While Speedsters and Roadsters have attracted the attention (and avarice) of uninformed collectors, Porsche's unit body construction has always meant that the coupés, with the extra stiffening and support of their steel roof structure, are the choice of drivers who want to appreciate the best of what Porsche's 356 series has to offer in handling and performance. The 356 B T-6 body's extra attention to ventilation meant that it could be enjoyed with greater comfort and enjoyment in all seasons and climates. The coupé's added roof structure, thanks to Porsche's careful attention to detail, incurred no weight penalty over the Karmann hardtops and cabriolets and weighed only a sparse 45kg, less than 100 pounds, more than the T-5 body Roadsters that went out of production in late 1961. Not surprisingly the coupé was Porsche's best-seller. It was a stellar performer, light, nimble and quick, that exemplified the attributes that caused Porsche owners to be some of the most loyal and enthusiastic in the world. Mike Amalfitano's 1961 Porsche 356 B Super Coupé is a prime example of these diminutive driver's cars that cemented Porsche's reputation, as well as brought the company into its industrial age as a volume producer building some 7,000 cars a year. Accurately and correctly configured with the 70 (DIN) hp 1,582cc Super engine, it received a complete and sympathetic restoration by Bill Jones in Texas some years ago in red with black vinyl interior to bring it to excellent, attractive condition that closely replicates its as-delivered presentation. It has chrome wheels and an accessory luggage rack on the rear deck, but importantly has a sliding sunroof, a rare and highly desirable option that significantly enhances its driving enjoyment without compromising its body's stiffness. This is a Porsche driver's car that gives the person behind its steering wheel the full experience of the 356 B Super coupé. It is described as driving as well as any Porsche of its type and has been regularly, consistently and professionally maintained ready for instant use and enjoyment on the twisting blacktop of New Hampshire's White Mountains.
