‘Prestige machine of the pushrod range was the Venom Thruxton 500. It incorporated all the accumulated experience gained in the years the Venom Clubman has been raced in long-distance events, plus the development of the 12 and 24-hour record breaker.’ – C E A ‘Titch’ Allen, The Velocette Saga. Although not a Thruxton, the machine offered here did take part in the gruelling 500-mile marathon at the bumpy Hampshire circuit, entered by Shipston-on Stour Velocette agent, Arthur Taylor A press cutting photograph on file depicts the Venom being worked on by mechanic David Bloomfield while Arthur Taylor chats to his son-in-law Cecil Sandford. The shot is sufficiently sharp to show the engine number ‘VM4244’. Prepared to Clubman’s specification and ridden by Rex Avery and Ken Douglass, the Taylor-entered Venom finished a creditable 6th in the 1960 500-miler behind the winning 650cc AJS 31CSR of Ron Langston and Derek Chapman. Restored in 1999 and described as in generally good condition, ‘VUE 581’ is offered with its original duplicate logbook wherein A R Taylor Garages Ltd is the sole owner listed. The document shows regular licensing up to 1965.
