Available in both fixedhead and roadster versions, the new model could be visually identified by the fitment of knock-on Dunlop wheels and scuttle-mounted badges proclaiming 'Twin Cam'. The new engine boasted a cross flow cylinder head in aluminium alloy, larger SU carburettors and twin chain-driven overhead camshafts whist the displacement was increased to 1588cc, giving 108bhp at 6,700rpm and a top speed of 113mph allied to brisk acceleration. To cope with the increased performance, Dunlop disc brakes were fitted both front and rear. The model was universally popular with 2,111 made worldwide, most in left hand drive format. Presented in Iris blue with black trim and having been extensively restored between 1995 and 2015 at a cost believed to be circa $100,000 Australian dollars, this example was originally registered and sold in New South Wales, Australia in 1961. Acquired by its second owner and Queensland resident Ian Mac Nee and used for spares for the rebuild of another race car before John Pitman purchased Chassis no 2422 as a rolling chassis in 1987 and subsequently purchased an engine from chassis number 1802 from the United States. We believe the car was raced and suffered some damage prior to race driver Rob Barr purchasing in 1989 and thus extensively restored by him before he sold the car in 2015. The car is sold under the identity of chassis 2422 as detailed on the Australian Twin Cam register and found within the history file which is well documented. Its history records that the car was used extensively for racing in Australia and subsequently our vendor purchased it from Gosford Museum in 2018. The car presents well and represents good value, considering MGA Twin Cam’s have been known to fetch in excess of £50,000.
