1960 AUSTIN-HEALEY SPRITE SPORTS RACING CAR Chassis No. T.B.A. Engine No. T.B.A. Dark blue with black seat Engine: four cylinder, pushrod overhead valves, Schlossnagel prepared 948cc, 78.5bhp; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: independent front by wishbone and coil spring, rear live axle with quarter-elliptic leaf springs and control arms; Brakes: hydraulically operated drums. Right hand drive. The Austin-Healey Sprite of 1958 was an inspired blend of selected mechanical components from successful production cars in a compact bodyshell just large enough to provide comfortable accomodation for two. It was a new type of small sports car, responsive, accelerative and with a familiar perky outline with unique 'frogeye' headlamps which soon became synonymous with the car. This example has been actively campaigned in historic racing in both its early days by Karol Kersh of California on a National level and most recently by its current vendor. This Sprite has raced at many of California's best tracks including Laguna Seca. The car has been fully prepared for continued use in competition from the ground up; the body was taken off the chassis and a fitted roll-cage was put in. It was then reassembled with stainless/grade fasteners throughout. The running gear was also race prepared, with custom machined suspension bushes and magna fluxed components. The engine was rebuilt by Schlossnagel who increased the bhp from a standard 43bhp at 5,000rpm to 78.5bhp and of course the unit was dyno tested. To ensure no overheating, a remote oil/water cooler is fitted. The sump is baffled to prevent oil surge. There is a custom made Fuel Safe cell installed inside the fuel tank and the Sprite has an on-board Phoenix Fire extinguisher system. All the electrics have been renewed and a competition battery fitted. The car sits on original American Racing magnesium wheels shod with Goodyear Blue Streak tires. A new set of VDO gauges are fitted to the dash. Spares with the car include a set of new racing slick tires, a full range of back-up engine components and 3 locked rear axle ratios. The body is painted dark blue with blanked-off headlights, single aero screen, twin racing door mirrors and driver's roll bar. We are told that the Sprite has only ever been driven on the track and not on the road. It should be an ideal entry into historic racing and has been meticulously prepared by the current owner at considerable expense and would make for a fun, spirited and exciting competition car for both the beginner or expert.
