The Alfa Romeo Giulietta was introduced in 1954 in coupé form and was the first truly mass produced Alfa Romeo. It was also a return to elegance rather than the utilitarian looks of the earlier models. April 1955 saw the introduction of the Berlina (saloon) and later in the summer of that year the beautiful and almost ageless Spider saw the light of day. All of the Giulietta models (750 series 1954 - 1959) were driven by the all alloy, twin overhead camshaft engine with gearing via a four speed, all synchromesh gearbox. The 101 Series of the Giulietta was introduced in 1959 and retained the 1290cc all alloy engine; changes were not immediately obvious; the suspension bushing diameters were enlarged, valve stem diameters were increased, water pump bearings becoming sealed units and a simplified throttle linkage connected to modified carburettors were incorporated. A split transmission used in the Sprint Specialé was now used on all 101 models with the more efficient Porsche type synchromesh now being used within the gearbox. Importantly; the Giulietta is known for its reliability and durability with parts and services being readily available from many specialists throughout the UK and Europe. We are proud to offer today an outstanding example of a 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider. The car was manufactured in November 1960, delivered to the US importer in the spring of 1961 and sold to a Californian resident. Imported into the UK in early 2011, it has since undergone a, no expense spared, complete bare metal restoration. The body was soda blasted back to bare metal whereupon it was found to be in excellent condition with no welding works required. The entire coachwork, inside, underneath (treated with modern stone chip protection) and external panels were etched-primed and refinished in the original colour of Alfa Rosso. Mechanically, the engine was stripped, cleaned and reassembled with new bearings, piston rings, exhaust valves, timing chains, reconditioned water pump and a new exhaust system fitted. All of the suspension components were powder coated and overhauled where required. The original wheels have been refurbished and fitted with new 165x15 radial tyres. Detailed works include; re-chroming of the front and rear bumpers, the original grill, door handles and sundry items. To finish, this Giulietta has been re-trimmed by renowned Alfa Romeo specialists, Coburns of Swindon, works that include the original specification; black vinyl seats and red carpets. A new mohair hood has also being fitted by the same specialists. The vendor advises us that the Giulietta will have an MoT test certificate by time of sale and the new UK registration has now been issued. Today the car looks fabulous; not only on top, but pop your head underneath and see that the undersides are also of the same quality. With prices of the Giulietta models rising strongly in recent times, this must be an opportunity to acquire a car at a fraction of the build cost and one that is ready to be enjoyed immediately. IMPORTANT NOTICE - Interested parties should note that VAT at 20% will be applicable to the full hammer price prior to commission.
