New for 1959, the Galaxie began life as a style variant of the hugely successful Fairlane that had debuted in 1955 as rival to Chevrolet's Bel Air. The year 1959 is considered by many a high water mark of Ford styling, an opinion endorsed by the award of a Gold Medal for Exceptional Styling at the Brussels World's Fair. In creating one of its most iconic models, Ford's stylists hit upon to the simple yet inspired idea of grafting the Thunderbird top on to the Fairlane body. The result was one of the decade's most memorable automobiles. Six body styles were available in the Galaxie V8 series, a line-up that included the innovative Skyliner retractable-hardtop convertible. The ultimate Fairlane/Galaxie engine option, as fitted to the Sunliner convertible offered here, was the 352cu in, 300bhp V8. When Ford totally redesigned its range for 1960, it ensured that the one-year-only, first-or-a-kind Galaxies would be one of its rarest, and today most collectible, post-war models. Sold new via Ocean Motor Sales of Winthrop, Massachusetts to first owner Harold Verdi in May 1959, this Sunliner Convertible first changed hands in 1976 and was purchased by the previous owner that same year when the odometer's recorded mileage stood at 4,500. In the succeeding 28 years a mere 1,000-or-so miles have been added to the total which currently stands at approximately 5,500. This low mileage, un-restored, 'time warp' car is finished in Colonial White with black vinyl top and typically 1950s metallic gold/black/white interior equipped with radio and clock. The tyres, including spare, appear to be original as does the stowage cover for the top. 1959 and 1976 bills of sale come with the car together with a host of in-period literature including owner's facts booklet, 1959 Ford Car Owner's Manual, 1959 Ford brochure, Ford Galaxie/Thunderbird Elegance brochure, the original production form and 1959 Ford Authorised Dealer Service Policy voucher for this vehicle issued May 20th 1959. It also has the original stamps under the hood. An exceptionally original example of Dearborn styling at its very best.
