Left hand drive. If ever there was a car that spawned a whole generation of motoring success, then the Porsche 356 must be considered. From a humble yet pure beginning, the 356 story is all success and the fact that the Porsche name is so revered today owes much to the classic model that started it all. The new Porsche Type 356 was launched at the 1949 Geneva Salon, the type number being the 356th project undertaken by the Stuttgart based Porsche design office since its formation in 1930. The new cars found immediate success in all forms of motor sport which reflected in sales, and when the Porsche family returned to their Zuffenhausen factory in 1950, all steel bodywork was introduced. The original 1,131cc engine was enlarged to 1,286cc and 1,488cc during 1951 and its final form of 1,582cc in 1955, which was then standardized for the remainder of its production run up to 1965. The first major style innovation since 1950 was the introduction of the 'Speedster' in 1954, primarily aimed at the California market, where in its 1500S form it became a popular race car. The Speedster had Reutter built bodywork that was wind-cheating and aerodynamic. It featured a short chrome-brass windscreen, spartan interior and a range of engine options. 1955 saw a major change in engine specifications with the 1500 being replaced by the 1600, providing Porsche with their first genuine 100mph production car and detail changes to the bodywork were introduced, so the car was known as the 356A. This 1957 Series 'A' Speedster is an original California car. In previous ownership the car was always well cared for and maintained and a restoration undertaken some years ago. To enhance the car's performance all round, the car has had a fully rebuilt 912 1600 engine with sport exhaust system fitted and to ensure that the car stops as well as it goes, disc brakes have been added. This work has recently been freshened with a complete repaint color sand and buff. The interior has been refurbished with new leather to the seats and period style German weave carpet trim throughout, in addition a stay fast tonneau/boot cover have been made, while the top has also been relatively recently replaced and is in good order. The car has also received a full mechanical service and a full detailing inside and out. Nowhere does a Porsche Speedster look more at home than in California, be it on the Pacific Coast Highway or parked by the beach, they are fun to own and drive and this example gives an opportunity to experience the legend.
