Beschreibung:

For the 1957 model year, Ford started working from a new playbook. Until that time, there had only been one size Ford passenger car at a time; for 1957 there were four series on two different wheelbases. The larger Fairlane and Fairlane 500 series grew a full two-and-a-half inches, to ride a 118-inch wheelbase. The entry level Custom, Custom 300 and station wagons grew just half an inch to a 116-inch wheelbase. All Fords were lower and longer, the Fairlane models outstretching the '56s by nearly a foot and measuring four inches lower. Styling was all new. The "Fairlane sweep" trim of the 1955-56 upscale models was adopted for the 500 series, and given a more sophisticated look, flowing downward from the headlamps, then curving upward and rising to end atop handsome tailfins. Other models had different but complimentary trim motifs, all of them accommodating the two-tone color schemes that were de rigeur for the 1950s. Engines included a six and three sizes of V8s, with displacements ranging from 223 to 312 cubic inches and horsepower to 245. At the outset there was but one convertible, the Fairlane 500 Sunliner. It was joined midyear by the Skyliner, a retractable hardtop developed from a stillborn Continental Mark II concept. Most open car customers, however, opted for the less complex soft top Sunliner, and nearly 78,000 were sold. The new styling was popular, and helped Ford mount a serious challenge to archrival Chevrolet. For calendar 1957, Ford and Chevy were neck and neck, but Ford scored a substantial victory for the model year. This desirable Fairlane 500 Sunliner has been up-rated with a modern power train. The engine is a 351 cubic inch Windsor V8, stroked to 383 cubic inches. It has aftermarket heads and an Edelbrock manifold with four barrel carburetor. The transmission is a 1990 automatic overdrive unit, and the car has been fitted with front disc brakes. It has covered but 200 miles since the rebuild. The original 292 cubic inch engine and transmission are available with the car, which is accompanied by a folder of records and receipts. Attractive in black with cruiser fender skirts, the car has its original black-and-white interior. The 1957 Ford was popular when new. Underappreciated for many years, these cars are finding increased favor, particularly since well-kept examples are hard to find.
