Eulogizing about Bentley’s new ‘S’-Series cars, introduced in 1955, The Autocar magazine in England was to write, “The latest Bentley model offers a degree of safety, comfort and performance that is beyond the experience and perhaps even the imagination of the majority of the world’s motorists.” It went on to describe it as “a modern magic carpet annihilating great distances” and this was just the standard ‘S’ model they referred to. The Continental model, launched in September 1955, adopted the 4.9 litre engine as used in the standard cars, but with a higher compression ratio providing brisker performance and a higher axle ratio enhancing the comfort of the long distance continental trip. H J Mulliner’s lightweight ‘Fastback’ offered sensational styling on the ‘S’ Series cars – 17ft 8ins of sheer beauty and timeless elegance. Little wonder that the Bentley stands at the world’s motor salons drew the largest crowds. Wind tunnel-designed aerodynamics set the model on a pinnacle and, along with the ‘R’-Type predecessor, Mulliner’s ‘Fastback’ ‘S’-Type Continental has firmly established its place in the league of the world’s great cars. BC 47 CH was ordered in April 1957 by John Irwin Esq. of St. James’, London, from Rolls-Royce and Bentley Main Dealers, Jack Barclay Ltd. of Berkeley Square in London’s exclusive Mayfair. The chassis was delivered to bespoke coachbuilders, H J Mulliner, on 24th June for erection of a ‘2-door 4-light Continental Saloon to Drawing 7400’ with specific instructions that ‘all possible done to reduce weight’. The new car was to be finished in Valentine’s Circassian Blue with grey leather interior and Factory Records confirm that power steering was specified from new. Mulliner records confirm delivery to Rolls-Royce on 13th November 1957 and the car was delivered to Jack Barclay and the guarantee issued to John Irwin on the following day. It remained in its first owner’s possession until March 1960. Subsequent history prior to acquisition by Frank Cooke in 1981 does not survive, however it is known that the car was acquired as part settlement of a restoration account. Although of later manufacture than the typical car in Frank Cook’s collection, the S1 was a favorite, Frank driving this car on the Nova Scotia Tour and attending the R-R.O.C. Newport Meet in 2003, amongst other events and general use for pleasure motoring. BC 47 CH, formerly British registered 91 JGC, enjoys the advantages of automatic transmission, the aforementioned power steering and after-market air-conditioning and is to right-hand drive specification. It is most attractively finished in blue livery with fine red and pale blue pinstripe coach-lining. The Air Force Grey upholstery reflects most careful use, the veneer door cappings and dashboard detail are nicely presented and the car is furnished with grey leather-bound carpets with blue over-rugs. When acquired by Frank Cooke this S1 was very much in its present condition and has simply been owner-maintained, although we are advised that during this ownership the brakes and king pins have received attention. It enjoyed a special place in the motor house at the Cooke residence. The car has been used but very sparingly in recent years and in view of the fast touring potential of this dramatic motorcar, careful recommissioning is recommended. A period owner’s manual, (not we believe the original one from this car), together with copies of Rolls-Royce Factory Records and detailed H J Mulliner & Co. Ltd., specification and build sheets are offered with this car together with a Certificate of Title dated 1984.
