1956 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Lot Number 307 Registration 264 UYM Chassis Number 1210426501818 Engine Number 1219215500058 Odometer reading 47,025 miles Estimate £74,000 - £82,000 Result Sold - £81,760 Print details Send this to a friend The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL, together with the 300 SL, made history at the New York International Motor Sports Show in February, 1954 by being the first new production Mercedes- Benz to be unveiled outside of Germany. The impression given by the 190 SL, alongside the bigger 300 SL, was neat, sporty and with dashing lines. Despite opinions, the statistics tell their own tale as between May 1955 and February 1963, 25,881 of these cars were produced - it was a huge success for Mercedes-Benz. Its engine boasted four inline cylinders with a chain driven overhead camshaft and two Solex carburettors delivering a respectable 108bhp for that era. The body was a monocoque design, welded to the shortened chassis of the type 180 saloon. A racing version with aluminium doors and a small windscreen was never produced although these parts could be ordered from the factory for weekend racing. Registered in the UK in 2015, this 190 SL has had significant sums spent on her by the vendor and as such she presents in very good order today. Recent works carried out include full re-spray and interior re-trim. Mechanically there is a significant collection of photos confirming the extent of the works carried out, this includes an engine overhaul and fiting of a new camshaft, new Weber carburettors, stainless steel exhaust, rear axle overhaul and five new tyres. The nett result of this investment is a car that starts on the button and drives as she should. A new hood has also been fitted. Supplied with a V5C registration document and a current MoT test certificate valid until 1 st May, 2018 this delightfully handsome 190 SL is a truly classy example of a 1950's Mercedes-Benz.
