The Ford E83W, also sold under the Fordson brand, was a 10cwt (half ton) light commercial vehicle, built at the United Kingdom's Dagenham plant between 1938 and 1957. They were powered by the 1172cc Ford side-valve engine, with a commercial gearbox, and were equipped with a very low ratio differential, making them much slower than the saloons, but giving them far greater torque. Anthony Hoists Ltd was a coachbuilder who specialized in modifying new commercial vehicles for the major motoring manufacturers, they built the steel back bodies for the E83W and others, with the Fords it was listed as a Builders Truck, rather than a pickup - it was certainly much beefier than the standard Ford offering which was made from wood. The E83W was aimed at the small haulage and support vehicle market. Vans were the most common, along with builders' flatbed pickups with wooden side and tail boards. The rarest by far is the steel back Side-Step pickup, with less than 20 known to exist in the World. Offered here is a extremely rare Ford E83W Step-Side models by Anthony Hoists Ltd, first owned by Herbert Shortt from new until 1990 when Mike Page purchased it as a restoration project. Mr Page then spent the whole of 1991 and 1992 fully restoring it to the original specification, painting it in green with black wings and in the late nineties, this Ford changed hands again and was registered to the East Lodge Museum. In 2001 the world famous commercial vehicle collector, John Mould, added this Ford to his collection where it remained until 2006 when it was purchased by Gordon Rimmer, an Orsmkirk builder who added his livery in gold to the pickup. The vehicle is said to be in very good condition throughout. It is offered complete with the original 'Buff' log book and MoT certificates dating back some 19 years. It is showing just 21,000 miles on the odometer, which is warranted as that being covered since the restoration, supplied with a V5C registration document and an MoT test certificate dated until 25 th July 2012. This beautiful, small, commercial vehicle has been seen at many rallies including the HCVS 2011 Brighton run and had pride of place in the lorry section of the 2011 Goodwood Revival.
