1956 CADILLAC SERIES 62 SEDAN DEVILLE Chassis No. 5662390 White with black and white broadcloth and white interior Engine: V-8, 331ci., 250hp at 4,600rpm; Gearbox: three speed column shift automatic; Suspension: independent front with rear live axle rear; Brakes: four wheel drums. Left hand drive. Cadillac's 1955 evolutionary styling and mechanical format aptly demonstrate the cautionary maxim, If it isn't broken, don't fix it. Cadillac was highly successful; its customer base was loyal and affluent; its sales were growing at a satisfying rate. Production of 1954 Cadillacs had been delayed (in large part because of the fire that completely destroyed the Hydra-Matic factory in 1953) and pent-up demand was a factor in Cadillac's 1955 record production of 140,777 cars, about five times Lincoln's sales for the year. Cadillac had introduced Harley Earl's little tail fins in 1948 (tradition says Earl was captivated by the twin tail fins of the P-38 Lightning fighter) and they continued to identify Cadillacs through 1956. However 1955 also saw earlier GM Motorama show cars' influence manifest itself in the jet-age fins of the Eldorado Biarritz that were shortly to supplant the propeller age in Cadillac's styling lexicon. The 1956 Cadillac's featured a major facelift. The cars featured a new grille with a finer textured insert and the repositioning of the parking lights in the bumper below the wing guard. Buyers were also given the option of the standard satin script or they could opt for the more opulent gold trimmed scripted cars. Befitting their status, and the expectations of their owners, Cadillac's standard equipment and its options list were comprehensive and opulent; interiors were luxurious. Cadillac's intended market was professionals and businessmen who worked hard in the Fifties' style and expected to be pampered, and recognized, for their efforts and success. Record sales in 1956 substantiate Cadillac's success in catering to them. The Cadillac offered here shows 72,900 and has not been run in many years. The engine bay is in very original condition however currently not in running condition. The panel fit is commendable, however there is some denting along the door panels of the car. The interior looks to have been recently redone and shows nicely. The car is equipped with many desirable options like air conditioning, power seats, AM radio, Autotronic Eye, and power windows. This Series 62 Sedan DeVille that has been stored for many years and will reward the new owner's investment of time and attention in its cleanup and careful mechanical re-commissioning with an aura as distinctive today as it was 44 years ago. WITHOUT RESERVE
