Extrêmement performant, il attire l'attention du bouillant importateur américain Max Hoffman, qui réclame à la maison-mère une version route et, par la même occasion, une déclinaison plus abordable. Ainsi, deux ans plus tard, au New York Motor Show, le stand de la marque arbore deux nouveautés de poids: le coupé 300 SL "papillon", d'une part, et le prototype 190 SL, d'autre part. Basé sur une plateforme raccourcie de berline 180, celui-ci comporte des trains roulants indépendants et une suspension soignée, à ressort hélicoïdaux. L'année suivante, en 1955, le Salon de Genève accueille la version définitive. Tout en reprenant certains traits caractéristiques de la 300 SL, cette nouvelle Mercedes de grand tourisme offre une ligne extrêmement élégante qui mêle sportivité et finesse. Elle est équipée d'un moteur 1,9 litres discret et endurant, l'intérieur étant traité avec grand soin : planche de bord en tôle peinte avec équipement très complet, sièges profonds, capote hermétique. Sur demande, et c'est le cas de la voiture que nous présentons, un petit siège d'appoint peut être installé transversalement à l'arrière. De couleur rouge avec sellerie cuir de la même teinte, ce modèle en état d'usage constitue une excellente occasion de s'offrir un des plus jolis cabriolets Mercedes à un prix attractif. It was extremely high-performing and attracted the attention of the impulsive American importer, Max Hoffman, who asked the manufacturer to make a road version and, at the same time, a more affordable line. While copying certain characteristic features of the 300 SL, this new grand tourer Mercedes offered an extremely elegant line combining responsiveness and refinement. It was fitted with a quiet, sturdy 1.9-litre engine and great care went into the interior: dashboard in painted sheet metal with a very complete instrument panel, deep seats and an airtight top. An extra seat could be installed sideways at the back, upon request, which is the case with the car we are proposing. This model is red with leather seats in the same shade.
