'The Aston Martin DB2/4 is an expensive car designed to cater for the connoisseur of sports cars who is not limited by financial considerations,' wrote Autocar, on October 2nd, 1953. Widening the appeal of the DB2, the 2/4 had four-seats, created by adding two occasional folding rear seats and raising the roofline. A one-piece windscreen replaced the split screen and a superior type of bumper was adopted, while the opening rear door pioneered the now commonplace ‘hatchback’ concept. Standard specification included the 2.6-litre ‘VB6E’ engine in 125bhp Vantage tune, but from early in 1954 the 3-litre 140bhp ‘VB6J’ engine was installed, providing 118mph top speed and 60mph in around 11 seconds. This was one of the fastest cars then built in Great Britain - with l00mph achievable in third gear and around 120mph maximum - possessing impeccable handling plus a level of comfort rare in any high-performance car. One of approximately 102 drophead coupés made, ‘LML/930’ was supplied new via Brooklands of Weybridge and first registered on April 29th, 1955. A Mulliner-bodied 3-litre model, it was meticulously restored at great expense by Twyford Moors in 2002 to its original colour scheme of Blue Haze with matching leather upholstery, hood and carpets. The old logbook issued in 1958 lists seven owners, mainly in London and the Home Counties, up to 1970, when we understand the car was taken off the road, remaining unused until its recent restoration. Finished to concours standard, this simply stunning car is also spotless underneath, the body and chassis parts all reported to be factory-stamped ‘LML 930’. The vehicle was purchased by the vendor at Bonhams’ Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale in July 2003 (Lot 540) and has seen little use since. Representing a rare opportunity to acquire a genuine right-hand drive DB2/4 drophead, finished in one of the most attractive of original colour schemes, the car is offered with Swansea V5 registration document.
