Right hand drive. "Sweeter and lower than ever before" , said the publicity when the TF MG came along late in 1954. It was to be the last of a long and honoured line of traditionally-styled and agile sports two seaters from Abingdon. They began life with overhead camshaft engines 35 years before with the M-Type Midget, became the T-series in 1936 with pushrod engines, in 1950 acquired a more solid look and indepedent suspension with the TD. With its sloping bonnet and radiator and semi-recessed headlamps, the TF was a clear break from the tradition and a little heavier than its elder sisters. Given a 1250cc engine in virtually stage II tune with 58bhp, it had adequate performance. A grand total of 9600 TF's were built. After the first shock of the TFs modernised appearance had passed, demand was brisk enough until it was superceded after a short production life by the genuinely modern MGA. The TF is a comfortable little car, the often conflicting demands of roadholding and ride cleverly balanced, as snug as can be in inclement weather with its well fitting hood and sidescreens. A fold-flat windscreen gives the option of exhilarating 1930's style summer's day motoring. Its lively performance and comparative rarity have ensured a continuing enthusiasm for the type. The owners clubs are supportive, offering a full competition and social programme with good technical and parts back-up. This example was purchased by the vendor about seventeen years ago. The body was professionally restored and is said to be in excellent condition. The mechanics were very good and still should be, as the car has seen little use over the years.
