1954 JAGUAR XK120 SE SPORTS ROADSTER Chassis No. S 675708 Engine No. F 3280-8S White with black leather interior Engine: straight six, double overhead camshaft, twin SU carburetors, 3,442cc, c180bhp at 5,250rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: front, independent with double wishbones and longitudinal torsion bars, rear, live axle, semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: hydraulic four wheel drum. Left hand drive. Few cars remain so instantly recognizable as the Jaguar XK120; its graceful and all-enveloping shape influenced the changing design of post-war sports cars. Its original conception was little more than a test bed for the new twin cam engine devised by Bill Heynes while on Coventry fire-watching duties on the roof of the SS Jaguar car plant in the later stages of the War. However, its appearance at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show was met with hundreds of people clamoring to own one of the most seductive and rapid cars of the era. Instead of the few hand-built cars intended, Jaguar had to tool up for serious production. Introduced as a roadster in 1948 at the London Motor Show, it revolutionized the world's sports car market by providing a genuine 120mph. The superb twin-cam six cylinder engine was to become a mainstay of all future Jaguar products, and provided five Le Mans 24-hour victories between 1951 and 1957. The car offered here is presented as a Special Equipment Jaguar XK120 Sports Roadster, or otherwise considered an 'M' indicating the more powerful 'modified engine'. Purchased years ago from a Jaguar enthusiast as part of an estate sale, this Jaguar has seen little touring use, but has been regularly run . The white exterior paint is showing some age but in general presents well. There are numerous chips to the paint at the closing of the hood, as well as the surface directly aft of the passenger area where the roof is secured. The black interior is complete, presents very nicely and requires little servicing if at all. The black top appears to be a recent replacement and shows very well, whilst panel fit is good and the body appears straight. Further, Christie's finds it with weathered side curtains and a tool roll. The XK120 is nicely offset with a very presentable set of chrome wire wheels. This is a special opportunity to purchase one of the all-time classic British sports cars. Some minor mechanical servicing would seem appropriate to prepare this driver, or an exterior paint restoration would complete an otherwise solid and most desirable of all the XK examples.
