Beschreibung:

1954 CITROEN TRACTION AVANT 15 SIX SALOON Chassis No. 726081 Black with grey cloth upholstery Engine: six-cylinder in line, 2,867cc giving 77bhp at 3,000rpm; Gearbox: three-speed manual; Suspension: front, torsion bars, rear, hydropneumatic with trailing arms; Brakes: four wheel drum. Left hand drive. Citroen's most famous and unique pre-war model, the Traction Avant (front wheel drive) was launched in 1934. Known as the 7CV or simply 'Seven', this revolutionary vehicle was noteworthy not only for its front wheel drive but for having its wheels positioned far out at each corner, as well as for having the gearbox ahead of the four cylinder engine. A subframe bolted to the monocoque steel bodyshell held the torsion bar front suspension, engine and gearbox. This unitary construction technique provided the basis for the advanced looking, low slung, rakish body design which before long became a favorite of European gangsters - both in real life and in movies. This design formed the backbone of Citroen's range (with larger engined variants) until 1955 and was not withdrawn until July 1957. Amazingly this was achieved with little change from its original form in either mechanical construction or appearance. This fine example of a Traction Avant 15 Six is an interesting model as it was built toward the end of the production. One major mechanical improvement made on these six cylinder models from 1954 was the introduction of an all-new hydropneumatic suspension on the rear wheels. While it was unknown then, this was an invention that was shortly to be seen on yet another revolutionary model, the Citroen DS which extensively used hydropneumatic power. It is believed that only around 2,000 of the six cylinder cars were built with the hydropneumatic rear suspension. The current owner purchased this Citroen directly from France in October 1986 and the car was collected from the shipping agent in Baltimore, Maryland in February 1987. In April 1988 a thorough maintenance service was undertaken costing in excess of $2,000, this was followed in the same month by a total engine rebuild and new clutch costing nearly $9,000. In November of the same year the interior of the car was replaced and new upholstery fitted to the seats, arm rests, and headliner along with new carpets. In April 1991 attention to the bodywork and a comprehensive repaint were undertaken at a cost of nearly $5,000. In October 1991 a further $7,400 was spent on another engine rebuild (top end with new valves and guides), together with a suspension rebuild. In April 1997 a suspension overhaul was carried out and throughout this period of ownership general maintenance and check-ups were carried out. A substantial quantity of receipts, including a photographic record of the bodywork restoration accompany this Citroen. This charismatic model is rarely seen at auction in the USA (very few were originally imported) and this handsome example will undoubtedly create a stir wherever it is driven. WITHOUT RESERVE
