Introduced in 1952, the Riley RME series were noted for their outstanding handling, torsion bar independent front suspension and rack and pinion steering giving 'a really comfortable level ride with a sureness of road holding which is quite outstanding'. An improved version of the RMA, the RME included an open propshaft, hypoid axle, full hydraulic brakes, and bigger rear window. Streamlined sidelights, the deletion of running boards, and the introduction of rear wheel spats were features of the 1954 model year. Understood to have been totally restored around 1990 and first registered in Norwich to a Camilla Lottie Hickling of Garden House, Norwich, it appears she owned this fine car until as late as 1966, the car then passing to 3 more owners until the vendor who acquired it in July 2003 – only five owners in 51 years! Originally black and now finished in two-tone metallic blue over silver, the new upholstery is in beige with blue piping. In the present ownership since July 2003, new tyres have been fitted, the radiator cowl re-chromed, a new quarter bumper fitted, and the door handles were replaced just two days ago! We have commenced investigations on the understanding that the previous owner may well still have the original engine and gearbox* (a note on file to this effect) which was promised free of charge to the new owner, the present engine and gearbox being a fully rebuilt example. Due to the owner’s most unfortunate ill-health this car is for sale at an asking price which is a fraction of the £13,000 paid for it just a year ago, with a good history file, several old MoTs and tax discs, original log book, Swansea V5, road licence to June 2005 and MoT to July 2005 accompanying this fine restored car.
