Despite its up-to-the-minute appearance when launched in 1947, the Vanguard retained a separate chassis, though it did feature independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes. Its engine was an all-new overhead-valve 2.1-litre four later employed to good effect in Triumph’s TR sportscars. This engine’s excellent flexibility was claimed to make a four-speed gearbox unnecessary, an all-synchromesh, column-change three-speeder remaining the norm for many years. Of great interest to collectors of military vehicles, this ex-Royal Air Force Vanguard pickup comes with RAF parts and maintenance manuals and further RAF literature, believed referred to as ‘standing orders’, together with British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate recording the Ministry of Supply as first owner. Restored circa 2000/2001, the vehicle is in generally good condition, running well, with the benefit of a four-speed, floor-change gearbox believed fitted while in RAF service. The under bonnet area remains in keeping with its time in service, the engine being painted that distinctive ‘military green’ colour, while the dashboard and rear compartment still bear the relevant RAF numbers. The underbody/chassis is generally very good, and we are advised that new kingpins and bushes have recently been fitted in order to pass the MoT test. The vehicle is offered with road fund licence to May 2006, MoT to October 2006 and Swansea V5.
