Beschreibung:

Daimler-Benz AG emerged from World War II in precarious health, with plants that were largely rubble. Until 1951, the only Mercedes passenger cars were continuations of the prewar 170V, a modest four-cylinder middle-class car that had been the best-seller in the 1930s. The company did not return to the luxury market until 1951, when the Mercedes 300 was introduced at the first postwar Frankfurt Motor Show. Built on a 120-inch wheelbase, the 300 was powered by a 2,996cc ohc six, and available as a sedan or four-door convertible. The 300 quickly became the state limousine of the Federal Republic of Germany, particularly favored by Chancellor Konrad Adenauer during his administration, which lasted until 1963. These cars are known as "Adenauer Mercedes" to this day. Produced through 1957, this W186 model in Mercedes nomenclature, had a tubular chassis frame, and independent suspension all around: double wishbones with coil springs in front and double-coil swing axes at the rear. Production of the first run of sedans through 1955 reached 6,214. Subsequent models 300b, 300c and 300d through 1962 totaled just over 12,000. This "Adenauer" sedan is offered in a pleasing maroon that Mercedes called "Bordeaux." A US specification model, it was restored for a previous owner by the L&N Olde Car Company in Newbury, Ohio, in the early 2000s. The interior is done in beige leather, with harmonizing brown carpets. Purchased by the current owner in 2006, it shows just 22,000 miles, and is accompanied by service records for the ensuing period. Recent work by Mercedes specialists MBI Motors in Portland, Oregon, has included replacement of all seals, refurbishment of the front end and steering, and overhaul of the carburetors. The vendor reports that it runs exceedingly well, and is a delight to drive. Included is an original handbook in German, enclosed in a leather wallet. There is also an English-language workshop manual for all 300-series cars. A jack and associated tire tools are located in the luggage compartment. With no recent show history, the car will make an elegant debutant on the concours circuit. While two-door 300 coupes and cabriolets are seen quite frequently, the four-door Adenauer cars are encountered much less often. Restoration of these cars is inordinately expensive, due in part to their relatively low initial production, but also because they were largely hand-built. All items originally hand-fitted must be carefully re-installed, and missing items must be fabricated, since parts from one car may not fit another. For this reason, acquisition of a well-restored car like this one represents unusual value. Sold on a Certificate of Title with the vehicle identification number listed as '186011'.
