The Super Snipe was introduced in October, 1938 and was derived by combining the four-litre inline six-cylinder engine from the Humber Pullman with the chassis and body of the Humber Snipe which was powered by a three-litre engine. The result was a car of enhanced performance and a top speed of 79mph which was very fast for its day. Its design was contributed to by American engine genius Delmar 'Barney' Roos who left a successful career at Studebaker to join Rootes in 1936. The Super Snipe was marketed to upper-middle-class managers, professional people and government officials and was relatively low-priced for its large size and performance and was similar to American cars in appearance and concept providing value for money. Within a year of introduction, World War II broke out in Europe but the car continued in production as a British military staff car and the same chassis was used for an armoured reconnaissance vehicle, the Humber Light Reconnaissance Car. In 1946, post-war civilian production resumed and the Super Snipe evolved through several versions, each designated by a Mark number; each generally larger, more powerful and more modern, until production ended in 1957 with the Mk. IV B version. This 1952 Super Snipe is a numbers matching, completely original car in excellent condition, owned by just the second owner for the last thirty years. It is finished in Masons black with maroon leather interior, white steering wheel and white instruments. The only item that is not original equipment is the modern radio that has been fitted. The straight six cylinder, 4086cc engine has been subject to a complete overhaul making this car a very reliable long distance cruiser which is more than happy to stay at the top end of the national speed limits. In 1951, The Motor magazine carried out a road test in a Mk. III and achieved a top speed of 81.6mph. This Super Snipe is supplied with V5C registration document, a current MoT test certificate which expires in September 2012 and a history file containing old MoT test certificates. This is a perfect family classic car which can be used to comfortably transport everyone to a multitude of classic car events.
