Following World War II, Rolls-Royce recognised the changing requirements of its clients, shifting away from chauffeur driven cars to ""owner-driver"" saloons, their first all new model was the Bentley Mk.VI of 1946, designed to be as compact as possible, due to steel rationing. Powered by an all new engine, derived from a new family of Rolls-Royce power plants, the Mk.VI used the new B60, twin SU carburetor, over head inlet/side exhaust valve engine with a displacement of 4257cc. The Mk.VI also broke tradition by being the first car Rolls-Royce or Bentley to have a standard body design. The four door body was produced in pressed steel and the cars were hand-built at the new Rolls-Royce factory in Crewe, Cheshire., All cars had manual gearboxes with righthand side mounted floor changes. Eventually replaced in 1953 by the long booted R-Type saloon. Separate chassis could still be purchased for special bodied coach-built cars and these obviously commanded a higher price tag and indeed still do. This well maintained car has been in North America since 1971 and only recently returned to the UK. A rare example with it being one of just 57 examples ever produced. Originally silver, it has had a high quality repaint in 1993 now sporting a two-tone non-metallic grey and the leather was re-dyed to match with new grey carpets also installed. The brightwork is in excellent condition throughout with very striking light maple woodwork contrasting well with the grey theme. A well-fitting black hood also finishes of the effect well. Recent works includes a 20,000 mile service, a new clutch, new tyres, new seat cushions, a new mohair hood bag, repairs to the fuel gauge sender and a new battery. Also supplied is a long MoT test certificate, a small tool kit and electric windows to the front. Furthermore, in August 2009 it won a first prize as Best Two-door Car in Show at the R-REC North of England Rally and features on Page 324 of Bernard King's book ""Bentley Mark Vl"". So reliable is this car in fact that, during the summer, it also completed a 2,000 mile rally on the continent.
