1947 INDIAN CHIEF Frame No. CDG 1447 Red with black leather seat Engine: V-Twin, 74ci.; Gearbox: three-speed; Suspension: coil spring girder forks at the front with a plunger rear suspension; Brakes: two wheel drum. Designer Charles Franklin was the man responsible for the two most well-known Indian motorcycles produced, namely the Scout and the Chief. The latter, the larger of the two machines, was offered initially in the 61 cubic inch form, this being the best balance of vibration and performance from a V-twin engine. The model would be basically developed and would stay in production in various guises for over thirty years beginning in 1922. By 1947 the Chief featured an enlarged 74 ci. side-valve engine, plunger rear suspension, and skirted fender styling. Well-equipped these sold well in a swansong for the marque. The machine offered here was totally rebuilt a number of years ago by Wymond Walkem's Walkems of Ontario, where work included an overhaul of forks, gas tank, engine, clutch and transmission. A new drive-line and chains, fenders, Deluxe seat, rear bumper and updated 12 volt charging system were also fitted. During this restoration the engine was found to be in sound condition with no broken fins, and possibly less than 1,000 miles wear. The machine has been modified with special valves to run on unleaded fuel. The current owner purchased it from Christie's Pebble Beach in 1998 since when it has been kept in a climate-controlled environment without any use. This is the ultimate post-war Indian motorcycle.
