The third of Velocette’s overhead-valve, high-camshaft, single-cylinder designs, the 500cc MSS was announced in 1935. The first of these new models had been the 250cc MOV of 1933, which was joined for 1934 by a long-stroke 350cc version - the MAC. In creating the MSS, Veloce kept to the basic design, combining the MAC’s 96mm stroke with a larger bore to create its new ‘500’. The MSS engine went into a new frame derived from that of the racing KTT. The model disappeared from Veloce Limited’s range in 1948 while the company concentrated on the LE, reappearing in 1954 with a new swinging-arm frame and Hall Green’s own telescopic front fork. The engine too was updated, gaining ‘square’ bore and stroke dimensions of 86x86mm along with an alloy cylinder barrel and ’head. This pre-war MSS was purchased by the vendor’s father in Beverley, East Yorkshire in 1965. In dilapidated condition when acquired, the machine was partially restored (the engine, gearbox and wheels being rebuilt) before its owner turned his attention to cars, leaving his son (the vendor) to complete the task. Starting in 1986, the vendor fitted new mudguards, replaced the Miller dynamo with a Lucas item and a JG voltage regulator, and had the fuel tank repainted by Lewis & Templeton. He then covered 5,000-or-so miles on the machine before having the engine rebuilt again (in the mid-1990s), this time by a Velocette specialist. A little over 8,000 miles has now been covered in the present ownership and the Velo is only offered for sale because the vendor considers that it has become too big for him. An oil tap and Lucas horn are the only other notified deviations from factory specification. Offered with Swansea V5.
