The Hudson Motor Car company was founded by auto pioneers Howard Coffin, George W. Dunham, and Roy E. Chapin, and largely funded by department store owner Joseph L. Hudson. In 1910, just one year after it was created, Hudson was the eleventh-largest auto company in America; a country then rife with automakers. Having then made its name as 'The World's Largest Builder of Six-Cylinder Cars' by 1913, the Hudson Motor Car Company held true to this boast for nearly two decades. The 'Super Six' of 1916 was the tour de force; its counterbalanced crankshaft was an industry breakthrough. By the late 1920's, however, the marketplace demanded straight eights. It was the Packard Single Eight of 1924 that made the inline eight a practical and popular automobile engine. By 1929, eleven other manufacturers had them. On offer today is an excellent example of the 1930 Hudson Super Eight. This Super Eight is built upon a 119 inch wheel base separate chassis and was assembled in circa 1930 by Johnson and Smith, motor body builders of Christchurch, New Zealand. The chassis was shipped from the United States to New Zealand where the coachwork was assembled in right hand drive form. The car was first registered there on 18 th July 1931 and registered as a Super Eight. Later versions were known as Great Eights and thereafter Greater Eights. The engine is a straight eight 3830cc side valve unit with a three speed gearbox. The handsome coachwork is in very good order and finished in dark blue with black fenders. To the rear is a wooden storage box covered in leather with an additional metal luggage rack. Indicators were fitted in New Zealand to meet their vehicle legislation. In 2007, the vendor imported the Hudson into the UK whereupon it was registered and all duties paid. He has also informed us that 10 years before the car was acquired, a restoration was carried out in New Zealand. Since current ownership, little has had to be done on this Super Eight. We are informed that it has been very reliable, running well with excellent brakes. Currently, the car is used for family outings and the occasional wedding. A history file includes the current UK and original New Zealand registration documents. In addition, there is a rare American Super Eight instruction book, dated January 1930. Although exempt, this Super Eight has a current MoT test certificate and Historic road fund licence. With American car values on the rise, this represents an ideal opportunity to enter ownership at a realistic cost.
