Beschreibung:

a folksy portrayal of an oversized Belgian stallion and its owner, shown in hand against a panoramic cityscape with windmills and factories. Signed by the artist lower left A. Demuelenaere / Brussels 1894; watercolor 23.25" x 15.5" laid on 26" x 20" paper (w/o frame); 28" x 22" (w/frame). Research into the history of the Belgian Draft Horse indicates that one of the four distinct groupings by bloodlines descends from a stallion named Colosses de la Mehaique who descended from the stallion Jean 1. The stallion portrayed in this early watercolor likely carried the bloodlines of this strain of Belgian horses and was named for the foundation sire. Genealogy research also indicates that a Charles Segaert worked for Louis Dobbels a landowner from Eegem, Belgium, and imported Belgian horses for some time after moving to America, returning to Belgium five times to bring horses back to America. Condition: Overall toning, some wrinkles and scratches, small .5" tear lower right.
