To give some indication of the respect that Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) attached to these specimens, the firm had previously graded only one Hawaiian Dollar better than Mint State 65 in all their years of business. Another major grading company, Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), has not graded a single specimen better than Mint State 65 after nearly 20 years of grading coins and examining several hundred Hawaiian Dollars. Both of these services combined have had many of the finest Hawaiian Dollars submitted for encapsulation over the past two decades. These coins are historically significant and important for several reasons. They were minted for a tiny island nation in the middle of the Pacific Ocean 2,500 miles from the nearest land, at a time when the only means of reaching it was by sea. They are the only crown-sized coins available from that monarchy, and are a necessary and integral part of any collection of world crowns. They have ties to the United States in that they were struck by the branch mint at San Francisco after the dies were prepared at the parent mint at Philadelphia.
