Beschreibung:

1883, Hawaii Silver Dollar Bust of the King, facing right, surrounded by the legend KALAKAUA I KING OF HAWAII, 1883; reverse: complete, crowned royal Coat of Arms, surrounded by the royal (later provisional government, then republic, then territorial, now state) motto UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO (translates to: The Life of the Land is Perpetuated in Righteousness), AKAHI DALA (One Dollar), 1 and D in fields flanking Arms. This extraordinary group of eight Hawaii Silver Dollars (lots 2663-2670) represents one of the most important offerings of Hawaiian coins in years. The newly discovered group of coins are in previously unknown quality, with one of the group designated at the highest attainable grade for a 19th century coin - Mint State 68. The coins were presumably put away shortly after they arrived in Honolulu from the San Francisco Mint over 120 years ago. It is safe to say that they have been seen on only a handful of occasions during more than a century of their existence. They proclaim their originality and are graced with breathtakingly beautiful wisps of light toning acquired over a long period of time. They have never been abused, enhanced or improved in any manner whatsoever and are virtually devoid of imperfections of any kind. It is a safe assumption to say that Hawaiian Dollars of this caliber will, in all likelihood, never be found again. To give some indication of the respect that Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) attached to these specimens, the firm had previously graded only one Hawaiian Dollar better than Mint State 65 in all their years of business. Another major grading company, Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), has not graded a single specimen better than Mint State 65 after nearly 20 years of grading coins and examining several hundred Hawaiian Dollars. Both of these services combined have had many of the finest Hawaiian Dollars submitted for encapsulation over the past two decades. These coins are historically significant and important for several reasons. They were minted for a tiny island nation in the middle of the Pacific Ocean 2,500 miles from the nearest land, at a time when the only means of reaching it was by sea. They are the only crown-sized coins available from that monarchy, and are a necessary and integral part of any collection of world crowns. They have ties to the United States in that they were struck by the branch mint at San Francisco after the dies were prepared at the parent mint at Philadelphia. This remarkable offering of rare, quality Hawaiian Dollars represents one of those proverbial once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that is unlikely to ever be repeated. MS 66 (NGC).
