Beschreibung:

156 pp. Boards and leather spine. Apparently the first posthumous edition after Tolon’s death in 1857 and possibly the only existing copy of this American Civil War period printing; WorldCat shows only an 1865 printing held by Harvard. By the first notable Cuban poet and playwright, who, in 1849, designed the flag of Cuba, based upon Narciso Lopez’s vision of Cuban independence from Spain; Tolon’s wife sewed the first example of her husband’s design. Tolon published this Spanish reader in 1853 before his premature death at age 37, written specifically for the “lector Cubano” (Cuban reader), with segments on Cuban themes. It became a classic, still in print as late as 1901, after Cuba finally won independence from Spain.
