Title: 1856 Yuba California three page letter with paper strip that once carried gold Author: Houghton, Charles Place: Yuba County, CA Publisher: Date: 1856 Description: 3 pp. letter on single folded sheet of blue paper, with original stampless envelope, cover canceled Strawberry Valley, Cal. Unfolded sheet measures 20.5x34 cm (8¼x13½"). Letter written to a Miss Harriet Jones in Sunbury, Delaware. County, Ohio. Final page of letter with brown paper strip which reads "Hattie," underneath one can see where the nuggets or flakes of gold once lay. Another earlier letter, dated May 16, 1852 from the same author is included. Charles Houghten was a cook in the California Gold Rush who listened at night as the miners talked about the gold found on their claims. At night Houghton would snip their claims for gold and send a little home to Ohio. More can be found on Chas Houghton letters and Diaries at the Bancroft Library in Berkeley, CA. Lot Amendments Condition: General light wear, original folds; additional letter with some small holes and some tearing; not affecting text; very good. Item number: 305199
