Beschreibung:

Autograph Letter Signed. 1pg.+stampless address leaf. To Henry Jessop, New York. “…We are sorry to report that Det Edwards has gone suddenly to California… his property is ample to pay [his debts]…Edwards was in good credit with all parties here… and no reason is assigned for his sudden departure.” Vouched for by the Hinkley Boston Locomotive Works, D.E.Edwards in fact sailed for California with his friend Calvin Nutting on January 27, 1849, on the Bark Marietta. On reaching the Isthmus, they were detained for 34 days until they could get passage to San Francisco on the Bark Equator, arriving in the city on June 16. They soon established a partnership for blacksmithing and general wrought-iron work. Edwards left the partnership in 1853, and there seems to be no record of his California future, but Nutting and his son went on to establish the Pioneer Iron Works Company of San Francisco which made fire-proof iron doors for prison cells and bank vaults and Bay Area government buildings.
