Beschreibung:

17th-Century Turkish Wars in Europe Manuscript, c.1680s TURKEY – LA CROIX, Édouard de (1640-1704). Contemporary manuscript copy, "Histoire des guerres des turcs contre la Pologne, la Moscovie, l’Allemagne, et la République de Venise. Tome I," n.p., c.1680s. [11], 470 pages, 226 x 169mm, contemporary pagination (paper repairs to closed tears on title and following leaf, light soiling to preliminary leaves). 18th century maroon morocco, spine gilt, all edges gilt, arms of Louis XIV on covers (caps and corners renewed). Manuscript history of the wars of the Turks in the late 17th century by a member of the French ambassador to Turkey, with dedicatory epistle to Louis XIV. The author, Édouard de La Croix, served as secretary to the French ambassador to the Sublime Porte in the 1670s; he is often confused with François Pétis de La Croix (1653-1713), a French contemporary who also wrote about the Ottoman Empire but was not associated with the French embassy to that country. The dedicatory epistle in the present manuscript alludes to La Croix’s diplomatic service in Turkey, which gave him unique access to its customs and internal politics. The work was published in The Hague in 1689 under the title Guerres des Turcs avec la Pologne, la Moscovie et la Hongrie. This manuscript copy, enumerated “Tome I” on the title and spine, appears to represent half of the printed work. See C. Thépaut-Cabasset, Le sérail des empereurs turcs: relation manuscrite du sieur de La Croix à la fin du règne du sultan Mehmed IV (2007).
