Beschreibung:

discharge, 1pp 7" x 9", New York (state), 31 Dec. 1783. Partially printed discharge (honorable) for Asa Kemp, 4th MA Rgmt. Signed H. Knox, M.Genl. Framed with ANS by Kemp, approx. 4" x 7", dated 6 Oct 1795, giving permission for John Gibson to receive his wages for 8 months that were due to him. The two documents are matted and archivally framed together, 13.25" x 20.75". The 4th MA was also the 3rd Continental, raised in April 1775 near Boston. The regiment saw action at Bunker Hill, Trenton, Princeton, Saratoga, Monmouth and Rhode Island. Note on back of frame identifies Asa Kemp (5 Aug. 1764 - 30 Mar. 1823) as enlisting in July 1779, apparently just shy of his 15th birthday. In 1780 he is described as 18 in one source, 20 in another - so he "stretched" the truth quite a bit. He married Alice Nutting in May 1781, and in 1837 Alice applied for a widow's pension, as a resident of Hillsborough Co., New Hampshire. Henry Knox (1750 - 1806) joined a local militia company at 18, supporting the rebels as a "Son of Liberty." In the fray from the beginning, he was present at the Boston Massacre and served under Artemas Ward at Bunker Hill. He impressed Washington who gave him command of the Continental Artillery. The two became friends, and Knox led the army into New York after the British left, and stood by Washington's side when he gave his farewell speech on 4 Dec. 1783. He remained as the senior officer in the Continental Army from that point until June 1784. The following year, Washington and the Continental Congress appointed Knox Secretary of War, a post he held for a decade, helping to form the defenses of the young nation. Condition: Both documents with expected folds and toning. Tear through "State of New York" with only minor paper loss of the "e" in "New."
